April 20 2015, we packed up our kids, house and dog and ventured over the Rimutaka Hill, Tony squashed all our belonging into a tiny one bedroomed flat over a pretty cool pub and we called it home! That first night I can honestly say I had my doubts, I loved the pub instantly it was my husband’s spatial awareness I worried about as we moved all our stuff just to make space to lie a mattress flat to sleep. From the first night of meeting the locals, to now knowing everyone’s name and drink, from kids settling so well in school and now college and getting to know the teachers (from school of course not the pub!!), from renovating our tiny one bedroomed flat to our lovely bright 3 bedroomed apartment. What a great small town this is, we know the local farmers, builders, police, butchers, vegetables growers, doctors and retail shops, I just love strolling through town waving, nodding or saying hello to everyone I pass, (I know most of them honestly, but I do say hello to visitors too) Some days it’s hard to believe it’s already been 6 years, but mostly it feels like I been here forever, we are so thankful for the welcome we received and for accepting us into this fabulous community. Here’s to the future, Thank you Greytown.
Its hard to choose photos for this post, but I think the 4 below are the essence of this country pub, long may it continue.
I love the Greytown Hotel, Tony and Ursula and the great people i have got to know when i am there.
Greytowns lucky to have such awesome publicans!!! 🥰
I couldn't imagine town with you and the pub! Here's to you, your family, and your team! x
Ursula you are amazing, your warmth and friendliness cuts both ways. We arrived in the rapa after you, and the first night we moved here we had a meal at your Pub. From that moment we knew we had moved somewhere special. You and your staff were like old friends on our first meeting. 😍
Crickey- I can't believe its been 6 years!! Happy Anniversary Ursula Byrne, Tony and your gorgeous kids. Still miss your smiles and laughs xx

So proud of you both..
Pretty sure i met you a few times before i "remembered" Ursula 😁 lots of good memories since
Just to let everyone know, 1860 restaurant will be closed from Monday 10th May to Thursday 3rd June, this is to allow the team to have a holiday, as you all know we operate with a small dedicated team so its very hard for any of us to take annual leave while we are still open. Hence we came up with a cunning plan to close at a normally quieter period in the year and allow everyone to have a well earned back.
Rest assured we will be back serving bright eyed and bushy tailed on Thursday 3rd June, in time for the last long weekend before Winter sets in.
PLEASE NOTE "THE TOP PUB" WILL NOT BE CLOSED, AND BAR MENU WILL BE AVAILABLE. Tony, Ursula and Carli will hold the fort. 😁 ... See MoreSee Less
